Uniform, personal presentation and effects

The following is taken directly from the information provided by the board:

In order to ensure health and safety and fair assessment of all candidates and in accordance with convention, the following guidelines for personal presentation are given:

  • All uniform should be clean and well fitting and underwear should not be visible.

  • Ballet footwear – Elastic should be firmly sewn on shoes in the correct position and securely fastened.

  • Tap footwear – Correctly fitted and securely fastened.

  • Street Dance footwear - Plimsols, Jazz Shoes or Jazz Sneakers

  • Hair should be neatly and appropriately styled for the genre. eg for Ballet hair should be off the face and neck in order that the line of the head and neck is not obscured.

  • Spectacles may be worn.

  • Jewellery must not be worn, unless required for religious or cultural reasons.

  • Where used, makeup and nail varnish should be light and kept to a minimum.

  • Visible tattoos should be covered with makeup where possible.

  • Candidates may take small plastic bottles of water into the examination studio. Normally water should only be drunk during official rest breaks.

  • Candidates who require asthma pumps and sprays are allowed to take these into the examination studio.

  • Candidates taking vocational graded examinations (Performer Awards) may take a hand towel into the studio.

  • Candidates may wear arm or leg supports if necessary, these should be white or flesh coloured. The examiner will make no concession in the case of candidates wearing a support.

A full list of uniform can be found on our website, here. Please note the requirements carefully and if you are unsure speak to your class teacher.

Hair

In addition to the guidance above we suggest hair be presented in a classical Ballet bun for Ballet, secured with a hair net with a colour co-ordinating scrunchie over the top to help hold everything in. All wispy bits be pinned & hair sprayed. Hair that is not long enough to go into a bun should be secured as detailed above.

After the Ballet exam we suggest candidates take the bun down and dance with a ponytail, leaving the rest pinned and sprayed in place. If they prefer to keep it in a bun for Tap they may

Street Dance candidates may present their hair however they prefer. A favourite of ours for those with long hair is hair in two French Plaits on either side of the head. If you do go for a ponytail make sure wispy bits are well secured back off the face.

We advise you practice your hairstyle before the exam itself. This will help you ensure that you are comfortable with the style and that it will stay in place during the exam session.

What to bring on the day

You will need your full uniform, drink bottle and any (clean) snacks that you would like.

Name absolutely everything.

Practicing at Home

We have put together a bank of online resorces for those wishing to practice at home.

Visit our Practice at Home page to access these.
